So I note that poor old Russell has thoroughly soiled his panties over being called tedious, boring, and utterly pointless. Now, I can’t decide what to do, so I’ll leave it up to you unwashed masses to determine his fate. Should I post an Beattie interview, so he gets a chance to reveal his true self to us, or should I take the high road, and ignore him? Some pros and cons:
Pros
It’s always fun to harpoon the incompetent.
He’ll probably cry, given how much personal info he has on his site to laugh at.
Secretly, people enjoy reading about other people’s suffering.
Cons
He’s a nobody, doing an interview with him would be insulting to everyone else honoured with one.
It’s a mean personal attack that has no place in such a fine professional blog.
I’ll likely cross any number of uncrossable lines which would reflect badly on me, in turn.
So, you vote. Should the little pig be publicly lynched or not? I personally don’t particularly feel the need, but it’s up to you kids.

I thought Rick promised to shut you up.

I think point #1 under Cons says it all.
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:14 am
I’m not sure where Joe got the idea that I “promised to shut you up.” I have not said any such thing.

just drop it mate - his own blog entry did him far more damage than even your fine self could hope to achieve
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:24 am
lynch the fucker
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:24 am
I think what Joseph got that impression was probably from this statement you made (on Beattie’s Site):
I read it quickly, and the first time I thought it was implying you were introducing something that would quiet him - but really what you were saying was that you would probably become cannon fodder soon ;).
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:28 am
yea, do it. i was suprised he just figured out what PreparedStatment.setObject() does!
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:35 am
Against. If you do so you just prove that you are more childish than commons-* authors.
June 22nd, 2004 at 11:42 am
I read his post last night. I’m afraid if you “lynch” him, he may have to be hospitalized.
I’m not kidding he seems very unstable.
A warning to Russ’s coworkers: If Hani biles him further, you may want to call in sick the next week or so just in case Russ goes postal.
That would be no vote.

Actually, I had never read his blog or even heard about this guy until now. The most boring part of the blog is the comments. You should do an interview but don’t forget to include some comments too, jeez leweez, Who are those commentors? Clones of that guy with the moustache and glasses who lives next to Homer Simpson?
It’s actually pretty pathetic the whole my blog has bigger breasts than yours…but it’s so much more entertaining than downloading and installing yet another Eclipse RC. I can’t help but watch. So, yeah, of course do the interview I need something to distract me, my new Gmail account is already boring.
June 22nd, 2004 at 12:03 pm
Those last two are cons? Like either of those has stopped you before?
June 22nd, 2004 at 12:58 pm
Never heard of this Russel, but read his blog, and attack on Gavin.
Go for it! After all it would be fun.
Reason? #3 of Pros
June 22nd, 2004 at 1:15 pm
Move on man. It is all childish and has nothing to do with the technology. Spend your energy doing something productive. We have more than enough negativity in this world and your attacking him doesn’t make anyone’s life better.

W/regards to alternatives to JDOM & dom4j, take a look at XOM by Elliotte Rusty Harold. It’s quite nice, and has now stabilized…

Well, I’m not sure if I’m unwashed, the fact that I don’t remember being washed proves nothing. But I’m also against it. Kicking a man when he’s down may be fun for some, but it is not productive. Go write your own wonderful XML api, for example! : )

Who the heck is Russell Beattie?
June 22nd, 2004 at 2:21 pm
He’s a nobody, doing an interview with him would be insulting to everyone else honoured with one.
after you just wrote
For anyone who spends any time being part of the ‘in-crowd’ of javaland, it’s very hard not to come to the conclusion that the whole lot of them are mostly a bunch of smug, self aggrandizing, pompous gits.
So apparently being a “nobody” is a good thing?
June 22nd, 2004 at 2:46 pm
Yes, this is all very interesting, but can I please have a gmail invite?
please please please!!!
I’ll be your whore.
June 22nd, 2004 at 3:04 pm
Stfu you blogwankers. Who tf is Russel Beattie? Who cares?
June 22nd, 2004 at 3:16 pm
I vote to make him cry.
June 22nd, 2004 at 3:21 pm
Do it!
This is the most fun I have had in days!
June 22nd, 2004 at 3:39 pm
well, I don’t know who this Russell dude is. However I have suggestion for an interview: do Mike Spille. Don’t bother with little ones, go for the big pig!
June 22nd, 2004 at 4:30 pm
Interview him! It’s an order.
June 22nd, 2004 at 4:57 pm
Do an interview with Rickard or someone that really has something useful to say.
June 22nd, 2004 at 5:03 pm
Searched for his site (never been before) and after wading through piles of drivel found the post (seems to be the only thing with more than 3 comments). It was funny. He hates you. A lot. Because apparently you attacked him in a neutral blog area. That would be fun to read. I fear for the child that spills ice cream on his shoe (TO THE ORPHANAGE!) or the cat that brushed up against his leg (TO THE POUND!). From his reaction one could assume you had done inappropriate things with his mother. Has he never been flamed before? Is he from distant galaxy where he only communicates with his different personalities (and they all like each other)?
The thing that I wanted to comment on was his resume. That is choice. I hire IT talent for a living. He would *easily* get a 1 out of 5 and go to the bottom of the pile just based on the resume. I almost never give 0 out of 5, but if I read his resume and a few of his “insightful” blog entries he would indeed earn the coveted 0 out of 5. Looks like the longest he has worked anywhere was about 2 years, most jobs were a month or two. And from the descriptions it looks like he is in no way delivery focused. He worked “in” departments or “with” groups. He *never* “delivered” systems to provide “value” to a customer. Maybe he just sucks at resume writing, but when I see a resume like this and I talk with people from their previous places of employment I invariably find that they “didn’t fit” or the company “decided to go a different way”. These times are not “get work done” lengths of time. They are probationary lengths of time. Lots of them.
I think the vote for interview or not is premature. I cast one vote for collection plate to get him a book on writing a resume.
June 22nd, 2004 at 5:18 pm
Do an interview. I agree.
June 22nd, 2004 at 8:51 pm
Do the interview! Bend him over and use him like a woman!
June 23rd, 2004 at 4:17 am
Asking myself: is invitation to interview modern equivalent to invitation for sword fight in Middle Ages?
June 23rd, 2004 at 4:26 am
No don’t ignore him. Do the thing and we’ll judge who’s the fuckwitt. You are the fuckwitt most of the time but Russ is a good candidate after I read his post about you. You see, on your blogs the signal(pertinent info, let’s call criticism so) vs noise(swearing) ratio is pretty good. On his post instead is 50%. Which is not nice. Just swearing w/o making points is useless. Go after him :-)
June 23rd, 2004 at 4:39 am
Do it!
ask him about how he “loads up his DOM”
June 23rd, 2004 at 6:27 am
I PUBLICALLY ENJOY PUBLIC HUMILIATION. ITS NOT A SECRET PLEASURE FOR ME.
June 23rd, 2004 at 7:55 am
O please, O please, O please, O please “interview” him!!!
June 23rd, 2004 at 9:52 am
Russell Beattie is a boring knucklehead who isn’t worth the bother. His blog reminds me of a bad tattoo– something he’s going to look back on in embarassment ten years from now, assuming he grows up.
June 23rd, 2004 at 10:35 am
Yes, yes! Cwucify Wussell.
June 24th, 2004 at 10:54 am
Bile something worth it.
June 24th, 2004 at 9:01 pm
I wanna see russel cry :$
July 1st, 2004 at 12:27 am
Don’t bother. Not worth the effort.
